Throughout history, people have tried to reject the alternatives in favour of democracy.

Democracy is the system of government that people would choose if given the choice.

Alternatives

• absolute monarchies - where individuals claim abslute power to rule as they please, as a hereditary "right"
  
• dictatorships - absolute power, but without the hereditary element
  
• anarchy - where individuals are free to act as they please but also vulnerable to others acting as they please.
  

These are worth considering to throw light on what is so desireable about democracy, and evaluate whether any particular system of government is really democratic.
